By Amit Joshi, Intern, Precedent Perth
As a part of my postgraduate degree in computer science at Central Tafe, I was offered the opportunity to enrol in the work integrated learning program. The program offers students the opportunity to seek industry experience and I was fortunate enough to be placed at Precedent’s Perth office.
When I first walked into the office, I was taken aback by the splendid office space. The view of the city is quite amazing and I appreciated the opportunity to work in such a nice workplace. Admittedly, in the beginning I was a little bewildered as this was my first placement and didn’t really know what to expect, but Precedent’s pleasant atmosphere helped me settle in.
During my three months at Precedent, I learned a lot about the industry and key sectors which Precedent have a vast knowledge in. I learnt a lot about technologies such as HTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, PHP, different CMS such as MODX and Drupal.
I gained practical experience from the placement which would have been impossible to learn just by doing coursework. I got the opportunity to work on a number of projects where I did a variety of jobs from editing templates to researching certain technologies to find possible solutions.
A highlight of my placement was the opportunity to work with organisations such as Synergy and Monash University. Working on projects for these clients really helped to develop my skillset further and is a unique opportunity which I am fortunate enough to be exposed to.
Now my internship has come to an end with Precedent, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Precedent for the opportunity given to me. The confidence I’ve gained after working with Precedent will certainly boost my chances of finding a job in this industry.
I would like to thank everyone for their support, I truly enjoyed being part of the team.

With graduation only three months away, and the final hurdle fast approaching, I felt my placement at Precedent could be my most important one to date. Previously I had been mentored by Ed Richards (senior designer, Precedent Cardiff) for a live brief at Cardiff Met. Within that short space of regular one hour discussions, I always took away something positive and a fresh perspective. Hungry for more, I was keen to reunite with my former mentor.
The two weeks I spent at Precedent where highly enjoyable and memorable. Not only did I learn so much about the industry I’m passionate about, but essentially what makes it so great.. and that’s the people!
Precedent’s friendly, welcoming vibe allowed me to slip right in and feel at home. They allowed me to explore creative avenues, ideas and thoughts in a number of discussions and presentations.

My time at Precedent
By Matt Rickard, summer work experience in business development at Precedent
Continuing with our mini series, we hear from Matt who worked here over the summer.
During my summer holidays I realised it would be a good idea to get some work experience. So I set about getting some and it just so happened that our school had a few fiercely competitive slots open.
I looked for something that I was interested in and considering I am taking both IT and computing as A levels, Precedent fitted the bill perfectly. I wanted to learn more about what relevance both my subjects had in an actual computer based business.
I would be shadowing one of the directors of Precedent, Mark Sherwin. He then showed all the meetings I could attend which turned out to be around two a day. This gave me a chance to see how a digital project runs from just a brainstorm all the way up until final pitch in front of clients with lots in-between. Other than going to meetings I have been involved in market research and testing.
